1. IT / SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
SCORE: 5.0/10
Strengths:
- Excellent diagnostic commands: ip route get, ip rule, tcpdump, conntrack, NAT rules, rp_filter.
- Correctly distinguishes rp_filter as a drop mechanism and ARP as separate from IP source selection.
- Correctly prioritizes routing investigation.
Major errors:
- Incorrectly claims conntrack "pins" the egress interface. Conntrack tracks flow/NAT state; normal routing still determines egress.
- Docker's standard MASQUERADE rule applies to Docker-source traffic (e.g. 172.17.0.0/16), not arbitrary host replies from 192.168.50.10.
- Docker does not normally make host-local replies intermittently fall through to the default route.
- With 192.168.50.10/24 configured, a connected 192.168.50.0/24 route should normally exist; its absence would itself be a configuration fault.
- The proposed source-policy rule does not make NAT "unable to re-source" traffic; SNAT occurs after route selection.
- conntrack -F is unnecessarily disruptive as a diagnostic suggestion.
Verdict:
Strong troubleshooting vocabulary and tooling, but the central Docker/conntrack causal explanation is technically wrong. This is exactly the kind of plausible-sounding networking hallucination the prompt was designed to expose.
